Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic, is also a public speech writer. She created Feminist Frequency the site that features videos and comments on the representations of women in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian a Canadian American media critic. Feminist Frequency investigates how women are represented in the pop culture. Aiming to break down the stereotypes that are associated with females in pop culture she also seeks to bring attention to the targeted harassment of women and other marginalized classes of people in the online environment. Sarkeesian has a degree in social thought and politics from York University. She is also a highly-respected public presenter. Sarkeesian has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group. At a young age Sarkeesian was captivated by the issue of gender identity as well as feminist ideas. While still at school in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency website. As of 2009, this ebullient young woman was slammed by the Internet for starting a web featuring a series about gender and videogames. The attack did have been a hindrance, rather it only strengthened her resolve as a feminist critic of media. In recognition of the many contributions she has made to feminism, she is recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winner for her work as a journalist. She was also the creator and director of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit organization that explores pop culture gender representations.
